he Photography Program is a four-year curriculum within the Louisiana Tech University School of Art emphasizing a fine art approach to photography through a combination of film-based photography and digital imaging. This provides the student with a well-rounded body of knowledge that can then translate into a variety of career choices. Freshmen study basic 35mm camera operation, black and white darkroom techniques, computer software and an overview of visual concepts. Simultaneously, the basic design and drawing courses give the emerging photographer an essential visual vocabulary and background in composition.
Upper level photography courses help students further advance their personal style and develop skills in several areas including digital photography, inkjet printing, studio portraiture, still life lighting, directorial photography, and the development of a portfolio illustrating the individual’s level of craft. Students learn to use equipment such as the medium format Hasselblad, 4x5 view camera systems, a 4x5 digital back, and various strobe systems. The lighting studio is equipped with professional grade equipment allowing the student to experience working in a professional environment. The skills obtained in these courses provide the necessary foundation for students wishing to pursue internships and paid positions in the photography community.
Throughout the photography curriculum students are continually developing their own creative imagery. Courses such as Concepts of Photography, Alternative Processes, The History of Photography, and the Senior Portfolio classes serve to create a collection of personal images that defines each student as a unique individual. The curriculum culminates with a cohesive body of work displayed in the Senior Exhibition class. Exiting students will then have the images and experience necessary to pursue exhibitions and publications of their work outside the academic environment. Those desiring a master’s degree in photography would use their senior portfolio for submission to graduate schools. The balance between creative expression and practical application makes the Photography Program a unique part of the Louisiana Tech University School of Art. |
