I began painting still lifes regularly in the early 1970's. My fate as a still life painter was sealed by the great Chardin retrospective I saw in Boston in 1979. The color, his use of light, and the intricate scale of his small kitchen paintings have all had a profound influence on me. As for landscape painting, I like to complete small landscapes in one session without reorganizing the subject matter. Paradoxically, I feel freer and more spontaneous this way. I began doing landscapes in the 1960's under the influence of my teacher, Eugene Ludins. My painting trips to Italy in 1989, 1990, and 1991, were an homage to another artist I have long admired -- Corot.
