 Joy Christiansen, originally from Ohio, is an Assistant professor at Louisiana Tech University. She is an active exhibiting photographer and installation artist. Her recent work has culminated into an exhibition entitled Family Gathering, which is currently traveling to different venues around the United States. Upcoming and recent exhibitions include Galveston Arts Center, Galveston, TX, Hartnett Gallery, Rochester, NY and The Women’s Museum: An Institute for the Future in Dallas, TX.
As an educator, my role in the classroom is to help students find their own creative voices and love for the photographic medium. For some, it is in the introduction to the magical darkroom and the meditative quality of printing. For others, it is learning to accomplish a task in the digital lab that they have been struggling with but finally mastered. And for even more, it is successfully communicating an idea to their peers in a critique through their photographs. I see each student’s time of study as a process to find that individual artistic direction.
